7/8 June, 2008 - Newby Hall [or the Evils of drink!] As most discussions in our family involve the odd bottle of something cold, this one started out well, Colin, my son in law said that the committee of the Newby Hall Rally had spoken with him and were very pleased with our three champs on our display at the rally (2007). "We" Colin, Kerrie [my daughter] and I, thought that as there were so many visitors taken back to their time in the services, what we could do to improve our display - Ha More Champs of course. The Newby Hall Committee, have laid guidelines for displays on their estate, so we approached the organizing group to see if we were allowed to increase the champs. It was accepted; as we were talking we said that as there seems to be nothing in North Yorkshire, how about trying to set up a "Champ" style camp at this years Newby Hall 2008, so tongue in cheek, I put a note on the Champ web page hoping to get a couple of more champs to join us. I was very impressed by the efforts members took to ask questions and those who had promised to attend - well they did not know me or what Newby Hall rally was about. It's not a military show - but vintage machinery and stationary engines! Also only being an exhibitor myself I could not answer all the questions - though I did try. As the year progressed we gained an addition to the family "Oliver" - Kerrie and Colin's son, so more work for the pair of them. At the beginning of June we were told that there were ten Champs coming to the event, well three of them were ours so seven visitors - Great! We were able to get on to the site and set up the "Colderdale" collection just before lunch, this year we were given an area on the corner of the site, a good position as the exit route passed in front of us, with a large hedge behind and a few trees to one side. About 2pm the first Champ arrived, quickly followed by three more. Unfortunately, that was the total for the weekend, due to breakdowns and work commitments the others could not make it. Though seven Champs in a row looked great, the lads, soon sorted us out and settled in, the weather decided to christen us(it rained like mad) we all moved into the Colderdale marquee for a chat and a cuppa or three, it was a case of getting to know you session which lasted well into the night. The rally was a great success, to the point that the rally committee have asked us back for next year. I wonder if there are any more champ owners out there who might like to travel to North Yorkshire, its Ripon area, the venue is about four miles off the A1. We have been promised about half an acre if we want it! I have mentioned the Colderdale collection, this is my son in-law Colin and his wife Kerrie nee Dunderdale, and also friends add to the collection for some shows. You can see from the photograph, we have a great back drop. As the group came together for a photograph a bit of height was needed to get the whole scene and back drop, luckily baby Oliver had his fire engine - An Austin Gipsy of course, at the rally, so this was pressed into service as an aerial platform.
