Simpson Desert. 1983

Malcolm Hayes, Gordon Hayes, Maritn Hayes, Kerri Bremner, Trish McCarthy, Robert Martini, Albert Bowden, Gayle Crocker, Charlie Chapman.

2 Austin champs,2 Landrovers and 1 Toyota landcruiser.

The trip was to cross the Simpson Desert west to east.... The French line was at that time almost untravelled, small trees grew out of the centre of the track. At times the track was hard to follow. Map reading skills were important as was courage.. now lots of people do that trip - but in 1983 we were one of the first groups... From memory its about 350 miles across with hundreds of sanddunes to cross, most quite large....

Pictures starting off at Albert Bowden's house in Melbourne and within a few days we were in the far outback, remote desolate, almost waterless wasteland. Champs were great on the sanddunes and comfortable to travel in on the long rough desert highways. These are some of the pictures that help to explain what the trip was about..... pure adventure, in the depths of the Australian Outback......
