In September 1984 Sid Hayes with sons Martin and Malcolm together
with Kerri Bremner and Trish McCarthy set of from rainy Melbourne
and headed north into the Australian desert in search of a river
to drive their Austin Champs in.
A river, in the desert, I here you ask?
Yes, it's true. In the centre of Australia in the deserts it is
possible to find lots of water. Large rivers run inland from the
Great Dividing Range down the east coast of the continent. Many
of these rivers never reach the sea, infact many early european
explorers of this country died trying to find the 'Inland Sea',
that they thought must exist.
The river we were heading towards is called Coopers Creek, it
only runs during the 'wet season' when the rains, the waters flood
into this inhospitable environment making it a very wet desert.
Our trip takes us north to Broken Hill in the south of New South
Wales, where we dropped in on fellow champ lover John
We then passed through Tibooburra on our way to Camerons Corner
the intersection of 3 of the Australian States.of NSW QLD and
