| History: | Peter contacted the
Register in August 2007: "Just
purchased the above in as-is condition. Up until 2000 owned by Gary Smyth of
Yarraville, Vic (previously Croydon, Vic), he used it as daily transport to get
to work and back. Possibility originally bought from Bill Patterson Motors, a
bulk purchaser of Champ both Aussie and British in the ‘60’s. 15982 was sold by
Gary Smyth in 2000 to Nathan Gribben of Strathmore, Vic Some work was done such
as brakes, refurbishing doors etc. but it languished in a driveway for 7 years.
Engine not started for 4 years .Thanks to Rose and Russell Altmann who was
contacted by the Gribbens I was able to buy an un-wanted vehicle blocking up
their driveway. On arrival today Malcolm
Bursell (another champman) together with 2 new batteries and I
were able to start it (somewhat splutteringly), enough at least to drive it on
to a tilt-tray. On arrival at a friend’s place which has undercover parking,
where it will be refurbished over a period of months. (the last one took 4 years
but this one looks worse, but is much better) We then checked out 15982. Seems
to drive ok (steering wheel a bit of a worry! – see photos) engine runs ok,
adjusted mixture screw and got it to idle at 400 rpm, no noises, no leaks,
radiator ok within slight weep from pressure relief valve. Gearbox drops out of
2nd (detent spring ?,or worse?). But all else is quiet- running gear
quiet as mouse – no oil leaks, but must remember all pommy cars leak oil – no
oil no leaks!!!! Tomorrow is another day"
Peter plans to resore this to a condition similar to his other Champ WN1-15757. Bottom photo shows the vehicle under restoration late 2007. |
