| History: | This one was sitting in Byford, just out of Perth. you could see it from the highway going through town, but it was obscured, and the grass was long. I called 5 yrs ago, but the owner didn't want to sell... so, having a relapse of this affliction I again tried recently. This time I spoke to the wife... who said she'd "talk to him". a week later I got the phone call, "come and have a look". This was the most rusted Champ I've ever seen. the floor, the seats, the seams around the back, the steering wheel was solid in the bushing, the (original) screen rusted away. The remains of the canopy hung in tatters, the (original W.D arrow) 100% tires were flat & perished. and the miles read 14,000. It turns out the owner, Charlie Drake bought it from my Dad about 1966, on a whim. He had been a prisoner of war (WW2) and just bought it as a "toy' or keepsake. (which I haven't quite figured, it being a post war unit). Charlie, it appears, only used it a couple of times. I had it dropped at my block, and had it going in about an hour. I drove it, (flat tires and all) into a better position, and now I'll think about it. I was thankfull to the dear old lady who talked her old fellow into it. So, I promised I'd never sell it (which I won't) but I'd call it CHAMP CHARLIE, after the owner. So now I'm looking for a good body. |
